• COMA is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Australian artist, Eleanor Louise Butt (b.1981) titled Unfolding Fields, on view Friday 15th May - 13th June at 37 Chapel Street, Marrickville, Sydney, NSW, 2204. This is the artist's first solo presentation with the gallery.

This new body of work by Eleanor Louise Butt explores painting as an active and immersive field, operating as a site of experience. The influence of her rambling childhood garden, along with the shifting light that moves through the trees outside her current studio, is present in the work—though the paintings are not depictions of gardens. Rather, they reflect a desire to be physically immersed within a scene, or within the painting itself. The paintings do not necessarily represent something discernible or knowable from the external world; instead, they function as worlds of their own, connected to the all-at-onceness of lived sensation, unfolding at varying scales and intensities.

"The works are able to remain active through the relationships developed on the canvases, and what I am attempting to do is develop a way of painting which remains closer to that originary chaotic event of mark making that begins a painting."
