Kieren Karritpul (b.1994) lives and works in Nauiyu/Daly River, Darwin, Australia.
As a Ngen’gi wumirri man, Karritpul is not permitted to weave, so instead he paints magnified views of woven objects and fibres, abstracting their cross stitching patterns into a coil like imagery that offer intimate and material pathways into the landscape and history of the Nauiyu region. At times Karritpul paints using his brushes made of his own hair, further emebeding himself and his presence physically into the work, reinforcing his belief he was born into the land.
Karritpul's works are held in numerous public and private collections, including; The Fowler Museum at UCLA, Los Angeles; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Museum of Cultural History, the University of Oslo, Oslo; ArtBank, Australia; The University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia; Parliament House, Canberra; Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney.
