Eleanor Louise Butt’s (b.1981, Melbourne, Australia) practice considers the ability of abstract painting to contain and convey a profusion of activity and ideas through the complexity of its system. Her layered and joyful interplay of bold form and colour are improvised in the moment, with apt room for ambiguity, chance, and experimentation to collide into an embodied process of creation and excavation. In this sense Eleanor’s practice reflects her phenomenological experience within the world, an extension of her lived experience, grounding her work firmly in the immediate. At the same time, Eleanor’s work speaks to potentiality, looking at not what a painting is, but what a painting can become.

"Eleanor produces multiple works concurrently. A gesture from one painting could be the starting point for the next... Intense moments of screaming, wrenching, and surprise, and then the pace softens and pointy-points of lightness rise up."
