  • COMA is proud to present Pentimento, a solo exhibition by Australian artist Justin Williams (b. 1984), this marks the artist’s fifth presentation with the gallery. On view from 28 August through 3 October, 2026, at 37 Chapel Street, Marrickville, 2204.

The exhibition takes its title from the art historical term pentimento, which describes the trace of an earlier image or brushstroke that remains visible beneath the surface of a painting. For Williams, the term reflects both the way he works and the way he thinks about identity. Nothing is ever entirely erased. Each mark, decision and experience leaves something behind.

A contemplative work, depicting a state of reflection and thought. Incense burns, marking the passage of time rather than action taken, a pause before a decision rather than the decision itself. The male figure is not focused on anything in particular, while the painted scenes on the vessel before him suggest a story absent from the figure himself as he exists in a moment of stillness. Everything within the work exists slightly apart: the solitary man, the bird perched alone, the vase and single flower. Each element is held in its own space, waiting for what comes next.
